King’s Coronation Bank Holiday
King Charles III’s Coronation will take place on Saturday 6th May, and to celebrate this, we have been allocated an extra Bank Holiday in England, Scotland and Wales on Monday 8th May.

So does this mean you must give your employees the day off as paid holiday?

Not necessarily…. There is no legal right to have a public or bank holiday off work. However, you should check your employee’s contracts to determine if they have a contractual right to have the day off.

Entitlements can differ depending on the wording. For example, the contract could state entitlement to ‘all bank holidays’ off, or it could stipulate that the employee is entitled to ‘8 bank holidays’ or ‘usual bank holidays’ off.

Even if your employees are not contractually entitled to the extra Bank Holiday off, you may want to consider how allowing it or not allowing it may impact engagement.

Consider what you have done previously and how that was received. You could also find out what similar companies are planning to do. You also have the option to invite employees to use their contractual annual leave entitlement to book the day off.

Whatever you decide to do, remember the importance of communication! Ensure you communicate to employees clearly and with plenty of notice so everyone knows where they stand and they can make plans.
